According to SEF data requested by Lusa, American investment captured through golden visas totaled 73 million euros in the year 2022, above the 65 million euros registered by China.
These data show a slowdown in Chinese investment through the Investment Residence Permit (ARI), as China has been at the top of the list of nationalities that invest the most since the beginning of the program in 2012.
Between January and August this year, the United States surpassed China, with a total of 145 gold visas granted. In the same period, China accounted for a total of 134 ARI.
North American investments more than doubled compared to the €25.1 million (47 gold visas) recorded in the first eight months of 2021. Chinese investment, on the other hand, fell 38% (€106.1 million and 208 ARI).
Since the ARI program was launched almost 10 years ago, the amount invested by Chinese citizens totals more than 2,913 million euros, with a total of 5,168 gold visas granted. The United States counts an accumulated investment of 268.2 million Euros and 466 ‘golden’ visas granted.
In the first eight months of this year, 806 gold visas were issued, which is in line with the average GV number sold in the last 10 years.
