In 2022 Portugal maintains the 5th position in The Henley Passport Index- the authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.
In 2020 Portugal finished in the 6th position, rising to 5th in 2021. In 2022, the country kept its position in a group that also includes France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
The Henley Passport Index of 2022 is led by Japan and Singapore, both with 192 countries, followed by Germany and South Korea in the second position with 190 countries available to visit without needing a Visa. In third place, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Spain passports give their holders the access to travel to 189 countries. At the end of the list, with just 26 countries, Afghanistan followed by Iraq (28) and Syria (29). Similar to what happened in last year’s edition, this year the Index disregarded the restriction created by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Quarterly assessed, the Henley Passport Index is based on the data available through IATA and takes into account 199 different passports and 227 international destinations.

To this top 5 position in the Henley Passport Index, we can add the 4th place on the Global Peace Index 2021, and realize that Portugal is not only one of the safest countries in the world, but it also has valuable citizenship and probably one of the best meteorologies in the whole wide world.
